MOVIES

Knocked Up
Friday, June 1
Rated R

Seth Rogen is a hero for the common man. He doesn’t have movie-star good looks, he’s got a good sense of humor and he works with Judd Apatow, the genius behind “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” “Undeclared” and “Freaks and Geeks.” Now he’s in a movie where he gets to knock up Katherine Heigl from “Grey’s Anatomy.” Seth Rogen wins at life.

All the familiar cast members from the Apatow-verse make themselves known once again in this film. It’s time for Paul Rudd to pick a side though. He’s been hopping in between Apatow films and movies by the cast of “The State” for too long. No more riding the fence, Paul Rudd! You’re only allowed to be part of one ensemble comedy gang these days.

Mr. Brooks
Friday, June 1
Rated R

Kevin Costner as a creepy serial killer? Eh, it could work, but who can really get excited about something from the man who brought us “The Postman”? What’s that, you say? Dane Cook is in it, playing a serious role? Are you serious? No one in the world is going to see this. Wait a minute. Dane Cook is in a movie where he might get murdered by a serial killer? We’re buying our tickets immediately.

VIDEO GAMES

Mario Party 8
Tuesday, May 29
Nintendo Wii
$49.99

There ain’t no party like a Mario party ’cause a Mario party don’t stop. It’s true! This is the eighth in the series and it’s becoming clear that people love their little Mario-themed party games. This one will be even more special with the motion-sensing Wii controller. Who knows what types of zany uses Nintendo has cooked up for the controller? In one game you might shake it, in another you might spin it! The possibilities are limitless!

Forza Motorsport 2
Tuesday, May 29
Xbox 360
$59.99

You’ll never have enough money to buy the swank sports cars featured in games like this, so it’s fine to do the next best thing and go behind the wheel virtually. The original Forza Motorsport was one of the most realistic racing simulations ever created, so you can expect the sequel to be even more impressive.

It’s so realistic that the bumper you knocked off your car will stay on the racing track the entire time, ready to inflict more damage on the poor driver who runs over it. In the ultimate example of realism, you will also be forced to stop the race and hand over your insurance information after a wreck.

TELEVISION

“Stay Out of the Water” Marathon
Monday, May 28
9 a.m.–5 p.m. EST
Sci-Fi Channel

Sci-Fi Channel is rolling out a marathon of Academy Award-nominated films this Monday including “Octopus,” the thrilling sequel “Octopus 2,” “Shark Attack 3: Megalodon,” “Crocodile” and, of course, “Crocodile 2: Death Roll.” A death roll isn’t a poisonous food item from the late Quincy’s Steakhouse nor does it have anything to do with a barrel roll. You’ll just have to watch the movie to find out the answer to this mystery.

These evil creatures really aren’t that terrifying when you think of the other things that could be in the water, like urine and used prophylactics. A trip to your local swimming pool is far more dangerous than tangling with a gigantic octopus.

Rocky Marathon
Sunday, June 3
1 p.m.–11 p.m. EST
Spike TV

If monstrous aquatic beings aren’t your thing, then get ready for this testosterone-injected marathon of excessive punching! It’s a marathon of the first four Rocky movies, back-to-back. Let’s be honest—no one is going to be upset that “Rocky V” is being cut out of the marathon. That would definitely be ending things on a sour note.

Many scholars have debated for years as to what the superior Rocky film is. Does Mr. T’s performance as Clubber Lang put “Rocky III” at the top, or does Rocky single-handedly ending communism in “Rocky IV” give that one the gold? The world may never come to a consensus on this matter, but everyone can agree that “Eye of the Tiger” is the superior Rocky anthem. “Gonna Fly Now” doesn’t even come close.

COMICS

52—Volume 1
Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid (W); Keith Giffen (A)
DC Comics

If you’ve been living inside a cave or an underground bunker for the past year, you can now easily catch up on DC’s big event with handy trade paperbacks. The first 13 weeks of 52 are collected in this edition and lay the groundwork for a sprawling story filled with adventure and intrigue. It’s also filled with gigantic evil eggs, dimension-eating robots and Black Adam ripping people limb from limb. In other words, all the things that make comic books great.

Silver Surfer—Requiem #1
J. Michael Straczynski (W); Esad Ribic (A)
Marvel Comics

The Silver Surfer was down in the depths of comic book purgatory for a while, but the success of Annihilation and the upcoming “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” have catapulted him back into the public eye. Now he’s getting a fancy-pants new series featuring fantastic artwork by Esad Ribic.

Let’s just hope the Silver Surfer’s newfound fame doesn’t go to his head. The last thing anyone needs to see is the Silver Surfer getting drunk at L.A. movie premieres and giving Paris Hilton a ride on his surfboard. He’d have to give that thing a good scrubbing afterwards, for hygiene reasons.
