Movies
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Wednesday, July 11 Rated PG-13
The fifth Harry Potter adventure has made its way to the big screen. It’s hard to even keep one actor locked into a franchise this day, so it’s quite remarkable that a cast as huge as the one in the Potter films has come back time and time again for each film. It’s also quite remarkable that the size of the books keeps getting larger and larger and the filmmakers still find a way to cram the stories into an acceptable running time.

In this latest installment, Harry returns to Hogwarts, but no one will believe him or Dumbledore when they claim that Voldemort is back and ready to stir up some more trouble. The Order of the Phoenix and its army of wizards are the last defense against Voldemort’s evil powers. Harry will have to form an alliance with new acquaintances in order to stand a chance against the dark wizard.
The Strangers Friday, July 13 Rated R
A young couple played by Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler goes out to a cabin in the woods for a relaxing little vacation. Their plans are ruined when three dangerous strangers show up at the cabin and make their lives into a living hell. It’s kind of like “Vacancy” except it’s in a cabin instead of a hotel room. It’s rated R, so expect plenty of brutality and violence that makes those PG-13 horror films look like weak sauce.
Television
Eureka Tuesday, July 10 9 p.m. EST Sci-Fi Channel
Who says there’s no good television on in the summer? Sci-Fi’s comedic original series returns with all-new episodes set in the crazy town of Eureka. The fun begins when a U.S. marshal stumbles upon the town of Eureka in the Pacific Northwest. The town is the site of a government relocation project designed to move all of the country’s geniuses into one location. When the geniuses unleash one of their scientific creations, it’s up to the stranded marshal to take care of the situation.
These geniuses may be talented when it comes to creating reality-warping devices, laser guns and super-intelligent robots, but they’re really lacking in the common sense department. They’ll outfit their unstoppable robot with deadly implements of destruction but completely forget to install an emergency off-switch to stop a robotic rampage.
Video Games |
Project Silpheed: Arc of Deception Tuesday, July 10 Xbox 360 $39.99
The Silpheed series has a long legacy but not very many games to show for it. The original Silpheed was released in 1986 and later remade for the DOA Sega CD. A sequel came along in 2000 called Silpheed: The Lost Planet and continued the vertical-shooter action of the original. Seven years later, Project Silpheed is here with radically different gameplay and more space combat than most people can handle.
Project Silpheed is full of dogfights between spaceships in open space, much like Descent: Freespace and Tachyon: The Fringe. A demo is available on the Xbox Live marketplace so you can see if the new type of Silpheed gameplay is your style.
Comics
Deadpool/Great Lakes Avengers—Summer Fun #1 Fabian Nicieza, Dan Slott (W); Nelson Decastro (A) Marvel
The merc with a mouth teams up with the greatest superhero team of all time for the team-up to end all team-ups! Squirrel Girl, Big Bertha, Doorman, Grasshopper and the rest are enjoying their status as registered superheroes and taking in some rays down at the beach. Deadpool teams up with the GLA to take down deadly hitmen and dangerous ninjas.
Squirrel Girl will also be reunited with her superhero crush, Robbie Baldwin, aka Speedball, aka Penance. He may be brooding and dark now, but that’s not a turnoff for Squirrel Girl. She has taken down the likes of Thanos, Doctor Doom, M.O.D.O.K. and Terrax. Why would she be afraid of anyone as lame as Penance?
Friday the 13th: Pamela’s Tale #1 Marc Andreyko (W); Shawn Moll (A) Wildstorm
We know all about the plight of Jason Voorhees. He “drowned” in Crystal Lake, somehow survived in a wooden shack for many years, got his hands on a hockey mask and wreaked havoc amongst the campers. Eventually, he died for real but was reanimated by a convenient lightning bolt and became the unstoppable zombie monster we all know and love. At the moment, he’s chilling out on another planet after getting jettisoned off a space shuttle. That’s all well and good, but what about his mom? All we know about her is that she was the killer in the original “Friday the 13th” and got her head sliced off by a shovel.
This new comic series seeks to fill in those blanks. How was Pamela as a mother? Who was Jason’s father? How did Pamela become so proficient at murdering promiscuous teenagers? All the answers will be revealed! |
