The Day After Tomorrow: Trailer Link

The trailer for “The Day After Tomorrow” makes special mention of the fact that it's brought to us by the director of Independence Day. Hey, I wonder why they didn't mention the fact that it came to use from the director of Godzilla?

Both of those films make me uneasy about the film. I though ID4 (What a stupid acronym) was over hyped and under delivered and Godzilla was, well, I think most of us know. Its Roland Emmerich's other accomplishments that give me hope for the film, most importantly Stargate which is freaking awesome.

It's hard to deny how breathtaking The Day After Tomorrow looks. The imagery involved in artic climbers making their way through a frozen New York City is just plain awesome. Since the title focuses on the day AFTER tomorrow, I'm hoping the film focuses more on life after the disaster and how people cope as opposed to just showing city after city being flooded.

I'm all for cool disaster footage (check out that dude getting wiped out by a sign in the trailer), but after a while you just become numb to it.

The cast looks quite solid. Randy Quaid's a pretty good actor who just hasn't had much luck in getting memorable roles. I'll never tire of seeing Ian Holm in anything, and while the role of wise old guy isn't exactly inspired casting, I'll take what I can get.

The rest of the cast is iffy, especially Jake “I'm not Tobey Maguire” Gyllenhall, whom I'm still not sold on.

There are a few things in the trailer I already feel annoyed about, specifically the clichéd authority figure that refuses to believe in the super smart scientist and eventually gets his comeuppance.

Despite the reservations, this is one of those “event movies” that if you fail to see will result in being ostracized from the rest of human society and most of us will probably end up going. It can't hurt to hope for the best.

The Punisher: Trailer Link

I'll try to be as un-biased as I possibly can be when it comes to this character that I know and love. The first two teaser trailers for this film have been kinda lame, with nothing but explosions and blaring “bodies hit the floor” music in the background.

The new trailer alleviates a few of those fears and also replaces the old Drowning Pool song with a brand spankin' new one! The beginning of the trailer is really odd with its whole Desperado vibe and the fact that this Spanish Johnny Cash would rather sing to his enemy than kill him.

I guess it's important to have a villain with some charisma in the film, but I thought that's what Howard Saint and the Russian were supposed to do. How many villains are necessary?

Speaking of Howard Saint, according to AICN John Travolta actually acts in this movie. From what I can see in the trailer, he's a little more subdued than when he usually plays a villain (Battlefield Earth), although he did have the moronic coffee cup throwing in the previous trailer.

There's not much to be seen of the other villain, The Russian, in this trailer besides Kevin Nash's beefed up arms. Showing The Punisher get the shit beat out of him is good enough for me.

It's nice to see the three roommate characters from Garth Ennis' run included in the film, although Rebecca Romijn-Stamos being cast as a mousy, shy woman is still weird ass casting.

Lastly, Thomas Jane seems to have the gravel voice down if this trailer is any indication. Fears about him being too small for the role should be assuaged by this new trailer, and although he's not as big as Dolph Lundgren, at least he can act.

The action shots in the trailer seem to reinforce what the filmmakers have said about this film being a departure from all the Matrix effect crap and going back to the roots of no computers and lots of explosions. The film makers seem to have a lot of faith in this film to succeed and a sequel has already been planned.

With just a 30 million dollar budget, it shouldn't be hard for The Punisher to make money, although coming out the same weekend as Kill Bill Volume 2 will divide its audience.

Walking Tall: Trailer Link

The poster to this movie is simple enough – The Rock holding onto a 2X4. Just because Jim Duggan retired doesn't mean you can just steal his gimmick you asshole. The trailer shows more of the same – The Rock smashing shit with a 2X4.

Well, this certainly seems like an inventive movie now doesn't it? I wonder if they've given The Rock enough stuff to smash with a board to sustain 90 minutes. Probably not, which means they've got to include a plot.

The Rock comes back from the army and smashes the casino of his corrupt ex-best friend with a board, which makes his ex-best friend smash him up and leave him for dead, giving The Rock incentive to become sheriff and then smash his ex-best friend's rear car light with a board. SMASH.

Perhaps the film makers felt that smashing things wasn't funny enough so they added the comic relief of Johnny Knoxville. Maybe he'll make some jokes about smashing things or 2X4s.

I think I'm bitter about this film mostly because of all the Joe Don Baker movies to remake they picked this one. Why not Mitchell or Final Justice? They're clearly the superior films. I can picture The Rock saying “Think you can take me? Well, go ahead on. It's your move.” right now.

While I'm not really intrigued by this film, I feel some odd loyalty to The Rock that makes me want nothing but the best for the guy. He's got the charisma to make it big in Hollywood and The Rundown should have done much better than it did.

I really don't think this is the project that's going to make him a superstar, but I'm hoping that I'm wrong and it makes a ton of money. Hell, maybe it'll even be an awesome movie and I'll have to eat all my words. I wouldn't mind that at all.

Around the World in 80 Days: Trailer Link

While Disney's animation department is currently in the shitter, their live action properties look quite nice. Based on the classic Jules Verne novel, this modern adaptation has Steve Coogan as inventor Phileas Fogg and Jackie Chan as his assistant Passepartout.

The trailer's got the whole “fun adventure romp” vibe going that makes even the stupidest of gags somewhat funny. The movie trailer voice guy is kind of annoying as he belts out his clichéd magical voyage of discovery jargon, but he can't ruin the trailer.

Phileas is going to be encountering a lot of interesting people, and judging by the cast of the film (John Cleese, Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates) they should all be funny. The most welcome cameo is by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in a role that's sure to delight all those women that accused him of sexual harassment.

The thing that pleases me most is the while Jackie Chan is in it, there's only one point in the trailer where he has to do some kung fu. I know he's good at it and it's expected of him, but I think he's good enough of a comic actor that in his old age he doesn't even need his martial arts to make a movie worth seeing. Maybe that's just me though.

This is obviously a family film, but judging by the trailer it's one of the good ones that won't bore the tears off the family that has to take their kid to it. There's some real talent behind this one and it would be really hard for anyone to mess this up.

Van Helsing: Trailer Link

No matter how hard I try to shake it, I have a hard time considering this movie anything but “Castlevania – The Movie.” It's about a monster hunter with a bunch of neat gadgets that he uses to take out the undead. Sounds close enough to Simon Belmont to me (His power-ups are sorta neat I guess).

Hugh Jackman is a man who I'm confident in my sexuality enough to call sexy and cool. He took over a role I thought no one could make look anything less than retarded (Wolverine) and turned it into something special. If he can do that, there's nothing he can't do.

The cast isn't the problem with this film. The real trouble is that I can't seem to figure out of this movie is supposed to be dead serious monster hunting or somewhat tongue-in-cheek. The trailer gives a mix of both of those things and while it can work in a movie, it's just jarring when done in a trailer. I guess it's better than outright lying about what the movie is supposed to be.

There's barely any content in the trailer and instead it chooses to focus on the fancy effects. All the gadgets highlighted are really snazzy looking, from throwing crosses to razor blades that sorta resemble the glave from Krull (ALL HAIL THE GLAVE). I guess the only real concern effects wise is how the monster's look.

The effects shots look okay for this early in the production, and I've noticed that one particularly awful looking shot with Mr. Hyde that was in the initial trailer has now been removed. I REALLY hope they fix that shot before release as it looked like something out of a 1960's giant movie.

The movie's got definite potential and you can tell that Universal is just dying for some franchise opportunity here as Van Helsing merchandise is already in the stores. Hopefully a newer trailer will come out that shows a more solid movie experience.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to watching the Beauty Shop teaser trailer over and over.
